Christmas in Northern Michigan is a magical time of year. From the decorated streets to the local tree farms, it really does feel like we live in a holiday movie. Whether you choose a natural or artificial tree, here are a few ways to keep it safe.
Prepare the base of a natural tree
Unless you cut the tree yourself, trim the base before you put it in the stand. Trees that have been cut and set aside dry out at the base, which keeps water from moving up the trunk. Take an inch or two off the bottom so it has a fresh cut to drink from.
Water live trees every day
An average Christmas tree can drink several quarts of water a day. Even if you do not think it needs it, add water to the stand daily. A well-watered tree stays fresh and is more resistant to heat from lights and nearby heat sources.
Keep your tree away from heat and high traffic areas
Clutter around heat sources is a recipe for disaster, and trees are no different. Keep your tree more than three feet from heat sources like boilers and heaters, and even farther from fireplaces and stoves. Make sure it is not blocking a walkway either.
Choose lights and decorations wisely
Those classic bubble lights may be a family tradition, but fifty-year-old strands can cause more harm than good. Inspect every strand as you unpack it and throw away any with frayed or damaged wires. Sparks are a much bigger concern with natural trees.
